Lay of the Land

I realize that I haven’t done a very good job of describing the island of San Pedro, so I want to try and give you all a mental map. The island itself is not very long, maybe about 20 miles, and the actual town of Ambergris Caye is only about 8 miles of that. Pedro’s Inn, our home camp, is located more towards the south end, a midway point between Ambergris Caye Elementary and San Pedro High School/ Isla Bonita Elementary. About a half a mile walk towards the north turns into downtown, which consists of three main streets: back, middle, and front street. This is where all of the shops, restaurants, street vendors, dive shops, and anything you can think of is located. All of these streets run parallel to each other, with the shoreline after front street. Walking the beach is also nice because of the breeze and the beautiful scenery, but the vendors like to bombard all the tourists with their homemade gifts/souvenirs. The high school is right on the water and the views of the reef are incredible. There is an outdoor auditorium that has a stage, bleachers, and it doubles as the basketball court. The main building has three stories and this is where the classrooms, offices, and faculty lounges are located. There is one other small building behind the auditorium that has classrooms and of course the cantina that serves as the “lunchroom.”
